Our Daily Homeschooling Curriculum (Comprehensive Curriculum of Basic Skills Workbook Grade 4) consists of: Math, English(grammar), Reading (also includes vocabulary), Environmental Science(science), Citizenship(social studies), Spelling/Writing, Thinking Skills, and Comprehension.
For math studies, this year, learning will consist of place value, reviewing addition and subtraction, multiplication (one x two digit on up to three x three digits), division (1 digit divisor and two digit divisor, checking answers), averaging, fractions (addition, subtraction, adding and subtracting mixed numerals, equivalent fractions, reducing fractions), decimals, estimating, measurement (inches, feet, yard, mile, perimeter and area, volume, ounce, pound, ton, cup, pint quart, gallon, centimeters, meters,kilometers, perimeter, area, volume, gram, kilogram, milliliter, liter), temperature (celsius, fahrenheit), graphs, ordered pairs, geometry (polygons, lines, rays, segments, circles), and reviews.
For English, subjects and predicates, compound subjects, intransitive and transitive verbs, direct and indirect objects, parts of a sentence, adverbs, adjectives, present, past, future tense, irregular "be", verbs, using words correctly, run-on sentences, combining sentences, joining words, underlined words in book titles, capital letters, proof reading, and reviews.
Reading, synonyms and antonyms, homonyms, prefixes, suffixes, miscellaneous vocabulary building, following directions, sequencing, classifying, analogies, practice reading skills, recognizing details, context, remembering what you read, main idea, and reviews. Story reading and book reports; written and oral.
For Citizenship, children are citizens, American voters, the Capitol, Sarah Winnemuccam, newspapers in education, Christopher Columbus, immigrants, The Alamo, Uncle Sam, The Bill of Rights, Susan B. Anthony, Cesar Chavez, the forty-niners, the transcontinental railroad, and Bells across America. Review.
Spelling & Writing, long and short vowels, writing with sentences, listening for vowels, learning differnet kinds of sentences, learning new words, telling nouns, verbs in sentences, putting ideas together, adding sounds to make words, practicing plurals, adjectives, doing puzzles, /k/ sound, using -ing verbs, finding mistakes in sentences, etc., /f/ sound, using topic sentences, sorting syllables, planning parargraphs, unscrmbling words, letters, /s/ sound, combining cause & effect, listening for sounds and syllables, crossword puzzles, adding prefixes, exercising imagination, comparing things & telling what happened, plurals from possessives, finding spelling mistakes, counting syllables, knowing facts from opinions. Review.
Thinking Skills, finding main ideas, recognizing details, taking notes, outlining, learning library skills, intro. to encyclopedia skills, summarizing, putting it all together.
Comprehension, following directions, comprehension, recognizing details, sequencing, main idea.
Extra subjects not included in the curriculum workbook are Bible Study, Computer, Typing, Animals, and Art class. These we do once or twice a week. For Bible Study, we include use of the internet with our studies. Their are so many wonderful links about the Bible for children. I also have a "Wonder Book", illustrated Bible stories and activies book. Computer, books, miscellaneous projects and use of the internet. For typing class, we use a wonderful program here on the internet (its free too), click here for EasyType. Animals, we will be learning about beavers, bats, wild turkeys, tadpoles and frogs, giraffes, wild horses, sea lions, hummingbirds, chameleons, rabbits, whales, dolphins, porpoises, sharks,and snakes (workbook studies and internet click here for more information and fun about these animals. Art class, different projects and crafts. I have found a really great URL on the net for art, Kinderart.com. Many more links below.
