FROM SUPREME:

Roberts Confirmation is "Encouraging"

9/29/2005

Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said today that the confirmation of John Roberts as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court "is an encouraging sign that this time, at least, pro-abortion groups did not have the ability to hijack the judicial nomination process in Washington .  Chief Justice Roberts responded to his harshest critics on the Senate Judiciary Committee with skill, honesty and good humor.  And while it is disappointing that 22 senators chose to vote against a man who is so clearly well-qualified for this position, we are glad that opponents did not resort to a filibuster, and hope that future nominations to the Supreme Court will be handled in a similarly straightforward manner."

At the 2005 Knights of Columbus convention in Chicago in August, delegates adopted a resolution declaring that Roberts was "exceptionally well qualified" to serve on the Supreme Court, and calling upon senators to "conduct prompt, fair and expeditious hearings," to "consider his nomination without delay or filibuster," and to "allow him an up-or-down vote on his confirmation."

"The Senate did all of these things, and that's a very good sign," Anderson said.  "We fervently hope that the same courtesy is extended to the next nominee as well."  Anderson attended Roberts' swearing-in ceremony at the White House today.

Catholic School Students to Create Handmade Ornaments and Decorate 25 Festive Trees

Nearly 600 Connecticut school children, kindergarten through fifth grade, are expected to participate in the fifth annual Christmas Tree Festival at the Knights of Columbus Museum.

The students will create handmade ornaments and then decorate  the 25 festive trees that are the main attraction in the festival. The Christmas trees will be on display through Jan. 29, 2006.

Designed to coincide with "Christmas in Miniature," a concurrent  exhibit of crèches from around the world, this year's tree ornament theme is the Nativity. Students from each school participating will also design and make a crèche for their tree.

Museum Director Larry Sowinski says the event is an opportunity for children to learn about Catholic art and culture, as well as the Knights of Columbus. "First impressions are the most important," he said. "For these young students, this will be a great first impression."

Each school is assigned a musuem-supplied artifical tree to decorate. With help from museum staff and volunteers from the Supreme Council office, students decorate the trees with ornaments they create in class.

Museum staff and visitors judge the trees based on originality, creativity and grade level.  Though first, second, third and honorable mention prizes will all be awarded, all participants are given something.

Museum staff will conduct educational tours of the exhibit and hold an arts-and-crafts project. Baked goods and hot chocolate are also served to the students as a snack.

Kathy Volpe, a fifth-grade teacher at St. Augustine 's School in Bridgeport , said the event is a "great opportunity for the children to work together on a project and learn new skills."
