Kia Motor's Rio Faces Safety Probe in US

Kia Motor's Rio is being investigated by the U.S. federal safety authority after complaints about engine failures.

According to a local wire service, the American National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) is investigating 61,448 Rios produced since 2001. The inspection was sparked by complaints from about 5 percent of owners that the car's engine broke down or caught fire.

The NHTSA is also scrutinizing three other models including Honda Accords made in 1998 and 1999, CR-Vs manufactured in 2002 and General Motors¡ Saturn L-series produced in 2001 and 2002. About 277,000 units of the two Honda models are suspected to have problems, which resulted in 10 accidents. The 190,000 Saturn models are believed to have defects in their headlights.

The NHTSA plans to conduct tests on the models. If they turned out to have defects, it will order the carmakers to recall the models.
