Story Of The Seed
by Linda Newman and Sherry Finley © 2002

Once there was a baby seed
That badly wanted to grow,
But he wasn't ready to stand tall,
He needed care, you know.
The little seed thought to himself,
Will I ever be able to bloom
With beautiful petals like my friends,
And will there be any room?

He waited many days in the ground
Where no one noticed him;
No one helped him to become
The flower he was within.
Sometimes storms came, harsh winds blew,
He wondered if he could survive;
Life’s lessons were hard, he felt so alone,
While everything else was alive.

Then one day our seed met a friend,
Who said His name was Jesus,
“I’ll send to you the sunshine’s warmth,
Just don’t give up on us!”
He also sent fresh water down
In the form of gentle rain,
And the little seed was touched with love
And started to grow again.

He began to push his way through the soil
With the help of Jesus his friend,
And one beautiful, warm and sunny day,
His work came to an end.
He poked his head out of the ground,
He giggled awhile in glee,
Then he frowned and looked around
At all that he did see.

Oh, everyone was so beautiful,
And stood so proud and tall,
No one would ever see him there,
He was so very small.
The other flowers, all huddled close,
Were blocking out the sun,
And here he was just a little green bud
Whose life had barely begun.

His little head drooped with sadness,
His world was filled with gloom,
Then the voice of Jesus said to him,
“I promised you you would bloom.”
That night a thunderstorm came up,
The wind was fierce and loud,
When little seed woke up next day,
No longer was there a crowd.

The garden around him lay in ruin,
The wind had bent them down;
The little seed basked in the sun,
No longer did he frown.
He blossomed out so beautifully,
People came from far and wide
To look upon this wondrous flower,
And he stood so tall with pride!

In each of us there is a seed
Which needs His love to grow,
If only we can keep our faith
We’ll blossom, this I know.
So hold on tight to Jesus’ love,
And don’t forget to pray;
And when your world seems sad and dark,
His love will light your way.
