SORRY FOR THE POPUPS - No such thing as a free lunch I'm afraid! :)
NEW! UK Major Cities and Towns waypoint file (see below)
Here is my first attempt at translating and manipulating real world aeronautical data for use with a moving map GPS / flight planning software. The software is called CoPilot, by Laurie Davies for the Palm OS and is free. The database is optimised for use with FlightMaster. CoPilot allows us to plan a flight and compute flight tasks such as W&B. FlightMaster provides the moving map display, HSI and proximity information (among other things) - they work brilliantly together. I use it on my trusty Palm Tungsten T3 in conjunction with a Bluetooth GPS device and a neat little suction mount. This combination is unbeatable for cross country VFR flights. The T3's battery lasts about 3 hours when being worked flat out (cigarette lighter charger is available).
There is already an online resource for generating waypoint information for CoPilot, it is the excellent Waypoint Generator by Paul Tomblin. I feel because I am able to focus on a particular region you will find my database to be the most detailed and complete UK database for CoPilot ever. It includes runway headings, ILS information and remarks where available and includes the extreme vast majority of UK based general aviation aerodromes - CAA, non-ICAO (licensed and unlicensed) and even private airfields.
I have also collected lat/long and some elevation data for nearly every microlight, glider, hang-glider and parachute dropping site and also old/disused airports for those interested. These have recently been updated to work with v5.01 of Flight Master which can now display the correct icons for each field type. Full descriptions are still provided to eliminate confusion. These however are not available within the standard waypoint file. Click the download link at the bottom of this page to download. Run CoPilot and allow to merge. Updates to System waypoints. Also is now available a waypoint file for UK CAA recognised VRP's (Visual Reporting Points).
Please also be sure to check out my Automatically generated list of aerial photograph links for all the aerodromes available within this waypoint file.
Area covered:
The ‘UK and Ireland’ database is actually bound by the following latitude and longitude lines:
Northern most point: North 61 Degrees, Southern most point: North 49 Degrees
Western most point: West 12 Degrees, Eastern most point: East 4 Degrees
Thus, the file also contains some airports in Northern France and a few from Western Holland.
Primary source:
DAFIF (Digital Aeronautical Flight Information File) is the main source used for worldwide airport data, navigation aid data and waypoints in this CoPilot database. It is bought up to date by it’s authors once a month. The source is a military source and thus is primed and intended for use by military pilots. It is very comprehensive. I have tried to make use of as much of it as possible. However it is important to note that ANY AIRPORT NOT SUITABLE FOR AN F16 TO LAND IS NOT LISTED IN THE DAFIF DATABASE.
Secondary source:
Because DAFIF was not enough, I had to use EAD (by Eurocontrol) for any airfield data not contained within DAFIF. I have no idea how often it is updated but gather it’s bound to be often as it is used by operators all over Europe. However, it too is not comprehensive enough to include all General Aviation (GA) aerodromes in the UK (and Europe). Furthermore unlike DAFIF there are no details regarding runway lengths and widths, surfaces, airport frequencies and airport elevation.
Third source:
The third source of data used in
this CoPilot waypoint database is the result of my own 'finger' work and
research. I use CAA AIPs to obtain airport elevation and radio frequencies for
airfields that are contained in EAD. Runway dimensions and surfaces are not
input. Please note: FlightMaster will not process runway direction information
if there is no entry for LxW and Surface. Therefore these are by default set at
1x1 and UNK (for unknown). However where there is no AIP for a
specific aerodrome, I use data collected from other sources including
publications and NOTAMs. Where possible the exact source is named. It’s
important to realise that for these airfields (mostly unlicensed farm strips)
the data is prone to mistakes and can be out of date. I do however emphasise
that I do attempt to keep lat/long data as accurate as possible so you won't
find Clacton up in the Hebrides! Therefore ALWAYS double check details
with an official publication before embarking on your cross country trips.

Limitations:
Due to CoPilot not being able to handle identical ident names, the first NAV aid and waypoint that is generated by the source database is likely to be the one that appears in the CoPilot database. Therefore, if there are two nav aids or waypoints with identical idents, only one of those will appear in the CoPilot database. There are some clear examples of this in Western Europe. However, I hope this doesn’t cause a problem for those who fly in the UK. If you do come across a missing nav aid or important waypoint I would be happy to recompile the database to suit your needs. It is a shame and I hope the author of the program finds a way around this.
Also, I have removed any waypoint which has the exact same name as a nav aid. E.g: There is a waypoint called BPK. Brookmans Park VOR also has an ident of BPK. Therefore the waypoint 'BPK' has been deleted.
The Notes page has a character limit of around 1000 characters. Therefore the remarks maybe truncated. This is not a problem for the majority of airfields though.
IMPORTANT
This waypoint file is in no way official. It is not intended for and should not be used as a primary means of navigation and planning. Where mistakes are apparent, the official publication takes authority. Always consult the relevant publications for current and correct information. The database is provided free of charge with no warrantees, expressed or implied. User assumes all risk of use.
Current Version: 14/06/2006 using DAFIF cycle 0606, EADS (as of 14/06/06)
