BU-52 HAMBURG, NEW
YORK This site
was opened in 1956. It was a double site which meant it could engage two
targets at the same time. It was equipped with six missile magazines as
compared to the normal three. Also the site had the extra radar needed
to track two targets and two missiles. The site was not chosen for upgrade
to the Nike Hercules missile and was closed in 1961. The original unit
at this site was D Battery, 465th Anti Aircraft Missile Battalion which
was redesignated in 1958 to D Battery, 2nd Missile Battalion, 62nd Artillery.
Currently the Town of Hamburg uses the launch area for bulk storage. The
magazines are flooded. In the IFC area the radar towers still stand.
