Never maintained by the state though, the Broadway Tunnel was built to pierece Russian Hill and allow traffic to flow smoothly under it, rather than force cars to navigate the steep slopes of this portion of Downtown. Built by the Morrison-Knudsen Construction Company, it was finished by 12/21/1952.
There are two tunnel bores for each direction in traffic; each are 11 feet wide.
