San Francisco
(James Lick) Skyway
Length: 2.1 Miles
Routing in SF: From Central Freeway/Bayshore (James Lick) Freeway (US 101)
interchange northeast to the Bay Bridge
Built: 1936, 1947-1950
Route Numbering: US 40/50 (1947-1964), I-80* (1947-)
* Technically the route is NOT an interstate, but this is up for debate.
The San Francisco Skyway was the first of two fully completed limited access highways within San Francisco (the other being its companion, the Bayshore Freeway, which is also part of the "James Lick" freeway routing). Part of the Skyway (the portion to Fifth Street) was built along with the Bay Bridge in 1936; the portion up to the Bayshore/Central interchange was complete by 1950.
Because of the early construction date of this route, it is substandard and is not actually an Interstate; but eastbound it is signed as I-80 East, while westbound it is signed as US 101 South. Reconstruction of the route may occur in the next five years; when this is complete, this portion of I-80 may finally be considered for actual Interstate signage (which it already has).
