Song Title: Blessed
Written by: Elton John
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey you, you're a child in my head
You haven't walked yet
Your first words have yet to be said
But I swear you'll be blessed
I know you're still just a dream
Your eyes might be green
Or the bluest that I've ever seen
Anyway you'll be blessed
Tracing a random pattern along my stomach, I shifted around, trying to find a more comfortable position. It was quite warm this evening, but not uncomfortably so. A mild breeze kept the air moving, blowing strands of hair into my eyes. I brushed at my face with absent-minded fingers.
It was a relief to finally be alone. The day had been filled with the usual work, but also a steady stream of people wishing me well and saying goodbye. While I appreciated their good will, the constant attention had worn me out. I had slipped away from my own going-away party to seek solace on the rooftop. Since the day of John's proposal to me here, this spot had become a favourite place of mine to unwind.
A year ago, if anyone had told me that I would be married to John Carter and expecting our first child, I would have laughed uproariously. I also wouldn't have believed that I'd be taking an extended maternity leave; date of return to work unknown. Since embarking on this new journey with John, my priorities and perspective had shifted. My career was still important to me, but not to the extent it had been in the past.
I need you before I'm too old
To have and to hold
To walk with you and watch you grow
And know that you're blessed
I was content to daydream, contemplating the future, and didn't even notice time slipping by. I was so lost in thought, the sudden voice made me jump a little.
"Thought I'd find you here," John said with a smile. "Sorry, I startled you."
"It's all right." I moved over so he had room to sit down beside me. "Have people even realized I'm gone?"
The party had started becoming quite noisy and crowded when I'd escaped. I was sure they were doing just fine without the guest of honour.
John chuckled. "Yeah, a few. I saw you sneaking out too, but figured you needed some time to yourself."
He knew me all too well.
John rummaged in his lab coat pocket, pulling out a folded sheet of paper. "We've been putting this off way too long," he stated.
I had a feeling of what was coming. "Names?" I guessed. We had chosen to let the sex of the baby be a surprise so we'd been contemplating names for a boy or a girl. We'd agreed that the final decision for the girl's name would rest with me, while John would decide our son's fate. However, I hadn't anticipated that John's family would get involved. His grandfather was especially insistent that we name our firstborn son Robert; somewhat of a Carter tradition, it seemed. Our daughter's name apparently wasn't as critical.
John nodded. "I gave Randi a list of the names we were considering and she printed them out, in no particular order. All you have to do is close your eyes and pick one."
That sounded reasonable enough, since I couldn't seem to make up my mind. Dutifully closing my eyes, it took two attempts to actually land my finger on a name, rather than a blank spot on the paper. We both peered down at the result. "Kathryn," I stated quietly, looking up at John. I had to smile. "Well, your grandmother will be pleased." Kathryn had been the name of Millicent's mother, but it also happened to be a lovely name.
John tried out the combination on his tongue. "Kathryn Carter. Yeah, kind of has a nice ring to it."
"Where's your list?" I asked.
"I don't need one. I've already decided." He paused dramatically. "Gabriel."
I couldn't hide my surprise or delight at his choice. "Really? But what about Robert?"
John made a face. "There's already too many Roberts in the family. I'd like to be a little more original. Besides, I like Gabriel."
I was especially touched, since I'd only mentioned in passing that Gabriel was a nice name. His namesake, of course, was Gabe Lawrence, a man who truly had been like a father to me.
Throwing my arms around John, I showed him my thanks with a long kiss, then leaned my head against his shoulder. We sat like that for a while, simply enjoying the evening air and our own reflective thoughts.
And after a while, we decided it was time to go home.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
And you, you'll be blessed
You'll have the best
I promise you that
I'll pick a star from the sky
Pull your name from a hat
I promise you that
I promise you that
Promise you that
You'll be blessed
