By Don Schaffner (Black
Cloud)
(Don) - I've gone through the restoration of a
half dozen glass ones and a couple of wood hulls. I got burned on a couple but had
good results on most.
First thing to do is check stiffness.
Walk in the boat while on the trailer. If the hull is w/o stiffeners and the
hull flexes under foot. Get out of the boat and keep shopping.
Second, grab the rail with both hands
in the area where the skipper hikes. Try to twist the rail in and out. If it
twists, walk away and keep shopping.
Third, check to see if the trailer
supports have left indentations in the hull. If so, think how much fairing
compound will be required plus painting.
Fourth, is the thwart in the proper far
aft location. If not, you'll need to notch it out so to roll the board aft for
balance.
Fifth, weight the boat.
Six, push down on the seat tanks. Do
they flex? Are there stress cracks on the seats or near the chain plates?
Seven, set in the boat and push
sideways on the centerboard trunk with your foot. Does it flex sideways?
If none of these things occur, buy the
boat and start the restoration.
